The Origin of Happening - Dick Higgins
In the article from Dick Higgins' the Origin of Happenings tell beginnings of the moment called "happening." The origin of this came from a visual artist, Allen Kaprow, who used various things in this work that can explain by the term. "Happen," because how it "supposed to happen naturally." The happening are usually live performance and theatrical pieces. The term was put to debate by many, all relating to how it works with time, but taking away all order placed to recieve the purest meaning to the piece, either in literature, music, or visual arts.
Creative Act – Marcel Duchamp
I found it a bit hard to understand mainly because it was my first real in-depth read into this sort of things. When reading the article I was given a feeling of good art versus bad art. I’ve also learn a lesson on the importance of the spectator. I never realize how they can affect the piece until after reading this. Duchamp beings to get wordy with this article of his and I start to loose interest but continue to read this work, this is probably because it just feel like it was getting “over explained.” In the end, I do think I understand his final thought about what we consider is art is.
Selections from the DADA Almanac
DADA, it means nothing. This form of expression I do get but do not really follow from ways it began. The ideas to repeal normality with something else, expressing it in a new way, shape, and form is what I like about it. I do not have a purpose in mine when doing my work sometimes, but rebelling what I normally do is a process I do from time to time. DADA does seems like it started it all, from that to the Happening to the Fluxus. I get confused at time because they seem carry the same traits.
Dick Higgins, Intermedia
VERY DENSE READING…
Anyways, I did find it to help me out a bit in understanding what Intermedia were and what it wasn’t. I thought it was just another name for mix-media in the beginning of the semester. Intermedia are in-betweens of genres, like drawing and poetry forming something as visual poetry. There were examples in the reading, such as the modern poems that help broaden my thoughts about what is art. I still think art is only aesthetic from time to time. I found the visuals in the reading more interesting than the readings itself. The chart did help me get a better look into what it was.
Trespassing Relevance
This was probably one of my favorite reading because the visual example. The idea of situationist and others reminded me of the DADA readings earlier. The idea of revolting and the revolution comes to mine when I read this. They seem to want to have a “shock factor” to their work. For example the “McDeath” logo can express so much without having written about it. I did enjoy the pictures a lot.
Lev Manovich, “Information and From”
“Argh” another dense reading for me…
The article gave a lot of names of people I haven’t really heard of. The main one that stuck out a lot was Gestalt because of my graphic design course, learning about good forms and idea forms. The reading was hard to understand because of complex theories and what seem like repetitive gibberish. The main thing I got out from this is that from and the information used are important in how we see and used it.
